what a week!

2008 August 2

Monday – I made risotto with mushrooms for the first time. I used the arborio rice variety, soy butter, chicken broth, sliced mushroom (fresh would have been better but we didn’t have any), and chopped celery. Feeling very confident, I took a photo of the ingredients, and put everything in the crock pot. Two hours later, my risotto looked more like a suman (sticky rice).

My risotto wasn’t a smashing hit for dinner. A assured me it was not disappointing, but I knew he meant I need more practice. True.

Tuesday – I attempted to clean out my closet. I could not finish it, and my frustration was creeping on me. I have all these million other things on my to-do list. Then the pool guys came to fix a leak, took them 5 minutes to change a tiny part, and charged 135 bucks! Whhaat??? Exactly.

Wednesday – I went for my repeat exam and also had an ultrasound. Apparently, there’s a couple of questionable areas in my first exam so these diagnostic tests were warranted. I. was. scared. – it was almost the same feeling when the allergist told us Jake could die if he ate even a tiny piece of food he is allergic to.

A and Jake went with me and we had lunch after. We don’t get to do this a lot. I was glad he could sneak out of the office for a couple of hours and spend it with us.

Thursday – I watched Jake swim with A. Wow. He’s improved so much. (These two are practically swimming everyday, and it’s paying off). Later that day, A reminded me he needs a break from work. I started to flex my planning muscle for the perfect family getaway.

Friday – I woke up with a few vacation ideas, but A wasn’t too excited. Meanwhile, Jake found my old Swatch with a dead battery and asked if he could have it. He recently learned how to tell time, so of course I gave it to him and we went out to get new batteries. We also went to Color Me Mine where he painted a four-wheeler, and finally we went to get fresh produce at the Apple Farm. I was exhausted, but I still had to work on our vacation.

Saturday – We are booked! All psyched, we made pancakes for breakfast, went bowling (Jake’s idea), and had yummy vietnamese food for lunch. We got new books for Jake and another cookbook to try at Borders. The best part of the day however, happened around dinner time.  A got a call from his college roommate — they have not seen and spoken to each other in 13 years, I believe. Thank God for Face Book.

My week played out as a roller coaster of emotions. I was worried about my health, happy and proud of my little guy, and excited about our upcoming trip. It was just one cazy week, don’t you think?

Right now, I’m feeling content and grateful. I have a loving, supportive and tremendously kind husband who, despite his long work hours, manages to carve out time for me and Jake.

It’s 2 AM, Sunday and we’re still up hanging out together.
