ice cream on a cone

2008 July 21

We are still sweltering from the heat today.  Temperature peaked to the 90’s for four straight days. I saw the lines at Maggie Moo’s ice cream shop this afternoon. It was insane.

Who doesn’t want ice cream on a hot summer day?

Thankfully, my son can enjoy this sweet treat despite his multiple food allergies. He eats soy ice cream. We get vanilla and chocolate flavors only.

Finding the allergen-free cone was the challenging part.

Eating ice cream on a cone is a wonderful part of childhood.  I didn’t want him to miss out so I was thrilled when I found Barkat Ice Cream Cones at a local health shop. I don’t normally shop there but I am always on the “hunt” for Jake-safe food, so I browsed their selection.

No wheat, gluten, eggs, milk and nuts.

Here’s the photo of Jake savoring his first ever ice cream cone last summer.

Barkat products are readily available online. They carry a lot of gluten-free items.  Our Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s doesn’t have them yet. I make that trip to the other health store when our supply is depleted.

The excitement and happiness it brings my son is so worth the effort. :-)

I have not personally ordered from them but they do have the cones.
    Goodluck!

We have a Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods in our area, but as you mentioned (and we discovered last night) they do not carry them. Do you have an on-line resource for these cones you can share? If not I’ll just do a random search. Thanks!

Thank you for your comment. You made my day. :-)

And yes, I’m grateful that my son can have soy. Good luck.

Glad I was able to help. I hope you find them in the store. If not, you can always order them online.

Good luck, and thanks for visiting.

Hi Jan! I was JUST wondering if there was such a thing as a gluten-free cone. I’m so thrilled to read about your gluten-free ice cream cone find. I’m heading out the door and will stop by our health food co-op to see if they can get these for me.

I recently blogged about pretzels & ice cream, but I have to skip the pretzel cones and UTZ rods and use gluten-free pretzels instead. A nice indulgence, but not the same as enjoying ice cream in a cone.

    Thanks Bernadette.
Being an allergy mom is sometimes isolating. Everyday is a challenge to keep my son safe. Blogging helps. I know there’s a lot of moms who walk in my shoes.
Jake is a happy and fun child. He gives us so much pride and joy. Thanks for dropping by.

hi, Jan! My husband and I feel sorry for your son’s condition. He has a sister who also needs to continuously check if there is glutein in the food. It is quite difficult especially for Germans who have it in all of their foods. But maybe because of this phenomenon, more independent food-producers are now coming out with a new concept in diet! Good luck and kudos to your nurturing care! Your son is quite blest!…and cute :-)
