Getting an allergy skin test (8 pricks), a blood draw, and 3 shots all in one day is not fun.
But our son handled it so well. No fuss. Is he brave, or what?
Mom and Dad are so proud you, Jake!
Now we have to wait for the results. I shall keep you posted.
Dear Jake,
I’m in a frenzy getting all your stuff ready. It will just be me and you once again, for 18 hours or so.
You turn my world upside down when we travel. What wonderful and silly travel memories we have. Remember when six flight attendants hovered around your nosebleed episode mid-air? How about when we walked through the airport walkway over and over to kill time, and hear the annoying sound of “mind your step” a hundred times? You thought it was funny that you spilled Oatios and trashed the airport lounge. We both laughed thinking if only Daddy can see us now. :D
You’ve seen me flex my muscles to handle a squirmy you, your stroller, your backpack and our boarding passes. I would desperately wait for you to sleep so I can get precious free time to watch an inflight movie even for two minutes.
Things have changed a bit as you got older. You don’t need much distractions anymore. You think the games onboard are the coolest. And you can handle your own carry-on. You don’t like window seats. And I think it’s hilarious that you automatically take your shoes off when you see the security gate.
I don’t mind being your travel buddy, your walking pharmacy, your very own nurse, and your mommy all rolled into one. Without Dad, I juggle twenty parenting balls and try to keep my cool. I may be a bag of nerves at times, but I look forward to yet another trip with you.
I wonder what adventure awaits us this time. I can see how excited you are. I am too.
Love, Mom

Yes, we’ve made plans to go back to Vancouver early next year. I never get tired of this city. I loved flying there when I was still with PAL.
It’s even better now that we have family and more friends to see.

Me and Jake (he was 3 years old) at the Capilano Suspension Bridge. May 2007.

Jake was never into stuffed animals. Then came Hamie.

He got this certified “asthma-friendly” bear from the Worry-Free Dinner last month at Dos Caminos.

Here’s a photo of him savoring the celery & prickly pear granita.
Jake seems to be late in the game for a lovey, I thought. Then it occurred to me. He was going through a huge adjustment in school when we brought the bear home. There was a kid in his class that teased him about his food allergies. I did everything I could to address the incident with the teacher, school nurse and the parent of the kid the very next day. You know me, I will not tolerate this kind of behavior.
For Jake, his buddy bear is a friend, and a source of strength and comfort because it came from Sloane, the Allergic Girl. She is my son’s hero.
— Thank you Sloane for accommodating us at Dos Caminos. We are so grateful for your efforts to host dinners for food-allergic families. We enjoy them so much and we will be back for more!
